Periods are a natural process that all women experience. Though they can be a little uncomfortable, there are many things you can do to make them easier. In this blog post, we will discuss what periods are, what products you can use to make your periods more comfortable, and how to reduce PMS pain naturally. We hope this information helps make your period experience a little less painful!
What are Periods?
Periods, also known as menstruation, is the natural process that occurs in all women when they lose their uterine lining. This typically happens every month and can last anywhere from two to seven days. Periods can be accompanied by cramps, bloating, headaches, and mood swings. Though these symptoms can be uncomfortable, there are many things you can do to make them easier to deal with.
Symptoms of Periods
Cramps: Cramps are caused by the uterus contracting to help expel the uterine lining. These contractions can be very painful and can last for a few minutes to a few hours. A few ways of easing cramps include the following:
- Taking over-the-counter pain medication
- Applying a heating pad over your abdomen
- Taking a warm bath
- Taking dietary supplements such as magnesium oxide or vitamin B complex
Headaches: Headaches are another common symptom of menstruation, caused by the changing levels of estrogen and progesterone. There are many things you can do to ease headaches, including:
- Taking over-the-counter pain medication
- Drinking plenty of fluids
- Getting a massage
- Applying a cold compress to the forehead or neck
Mood swings: Mood swings are another common symptom of menstruation that are caused by the fluctuating hormone levels during this time. Here's a list of a few things you can try to reduce those mood swings:
- Exercising regularly
- Eating a balanced diet
- Getting enough sleep
- Taking over-the-counter supplements such as omega-three fatty acids or magnesium oxide
What Products Can Be Used?
There are three main types of products that can be used during your period: sanitary napkins, tampons, and cups. Sanitary napkins are the most common option and come in a wide variety of sizes and absorbencies. They attach to your underwear with adhesive strips or wings and can be worn for up to eight hours.
Tampons are another option that many women use during their period. Tampons are small, cylindrical pieces of cotton that are used to absorb menstrual blood. They come in different absorbance levels and can be changed every few hours.
Cups are a newer option and are made of silicone or latex. They collect your blood in a cup instead of absorbing it like a napkin or tampon does. Cups can be worn for up to twelve hours and have the added benefit of being reusable.
How to Reduce PMS Pain Naturally
There are many things you can do to reduce the pain associated with PMS. One of the best things you can do is exercise regularly. Exercise releases endorphins, which have natural pain-relieving properties. You can also try taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If you find that your symptoms are severe, you may want to talk to your doctor about taking prescription medications. You can also try using a heating pad or massage your abdomen to help relieve cramps.
