About Biomycin 1% Gel

Biomycin 1% Gel belongs to a group of medicines known as macrolide antibiotics used to treat acne vulgaris. Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition that almost everyone suffers from at some point in their lives. Acne develops when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and oil.

Biomycin 1% Gel contains Clarithromycin, which inhibits the synthesis of essential nutrients required for bacterial survival. As a result, Biomycin 1% Gel kills the acne-causing bacteria.

Biomycin 1% Gel is for external use only. Some people may experience side effects like burning sensation, peeling, itching, redness and dry skin. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, consult a doctor.

Do not use Biomycin 1% Gel if you are allergic to clarithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin, azithromycin, or any of the other components of this medicine. Almost all antibacterial medications have been associated with cases of Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea (CDAD), formerly known as pseudomembranous colitis. It can vary from mild diarrhoea to deadly colitis. Clindamycin and lincomycin are two of the most frequent those involved.

Anti-bacterial medicines may cause Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) ranging from mild diarrhoea to colitis. Therapy should be administered with caution in patients with history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis and pseudomembranous colitis. Patients on Biomycin 1% Gel 15 gm have been reported to experience hepatic dysfunction, including elevated liver enzymes, cholestatic and/or hepatocellular hepatitis, with or without jaundice. Using this medication to patients with hepatic impairment requires caution and close monitoring. If hepatitis signs and symptoms appear, treatment must be stopped.

Caution and monitoring is advised if Biomycin 1% Gel 15 gm is used in patients with liver impairment. Treatment must be discontinued immediately if signs and symptoms of hepatitis such as anorexia, jaundice, dark urine, pruritus, or tender abdomen occur. The use of Biomycin 1% Gel 15 gm is contraindicated in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice or liver impairment associated with the prior use of Biomycin 1% Gel 15 gm.
