About Cefa-200 Tablet

Cefa-200 Tablet belongs to the group of antibiotic medicines called 'cephalosporins' used to treat bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, lower respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and soft tissue. Bacterial infections are caused due to the multiplication of harmful bacteria inside or on the body.

Cefa-200 Tablet contains 'Cefpodoxime Proxetil' which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against both gram-positive and negative groups of bacteria. It works by preventing the formation of bacterial cell covering (cell wall), which is necessary for their survival. Thereby, it kills the bacteria and helps in treating and preventing the spread of bacterial infections.

Take this medicine as prescribed. In some cases, you may experience certain common side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea (watery or loose stool), abdominal pain, loss of appetite, bloating, skin rash, and itching. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects persistently.

Talk to your doctor before taking Cefa-200 Tablet if you have had inflammation in the bowel, kidney or liver problems. Do not take antacids and anti-ulcer medicines along with Cefa-200 Tablet ; maintain a gap of 2-3 hours between both. Colitis: In some cases the use of Cefa-200 Tablet may cause ranging from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis. Colitis is commonly Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). Discontinue therapy if signs of CDAD are confirmed.

How to manage the interaction:
Antibiotics may cause Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea (CDAD), which may range from mild diarrhoea to fatal colitis. Cefa-200 Tablet should be used with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis (inflammation of the colon) or pseudomembranous colitis (a severe inflammation of the inner lining of the large intestine). Appropriate fluid and electrolyte management, protein supplementation, antibacterial treatment of C difficile, and surgical evaluation is advised.

Renal dysfunction: Cefa-200 Tablet is eliminated by the kidney in an unchanged form. Thus the plasma levels of the drug increase and prolongs the half-life. Adjust the doses of Cefa-200 Tablet as necessary.

The serum concentration may be increased in patients with impaired kidney function as most beta-lactam antibiotics are eliminated by the kidney. Dose adjustment may be necessary for patients with kidney dysfunction. Regular renal function tests are advised during prolonged or high-dose therapy.

Cefa-200 Tablet may cause stomach upset as a side-effect. To avoid this, take Cefa-200 Tablet preferably with food. Taking Cefa-200 Tablet with food helps in increasing its absorption in the body.
