About Gemcal Nasal Spray

Gemcal Nasal Spray belongs to groups of medications called hypocalcemic agents, primarily indicated for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women more than five years postmenopause when alternative therapies are unsuitable. Post-menopausal osteoporosis is a medical condition that causes thinning and weakening of the bones during/after a menopausal period.

Gemcal Nasal Spray contains Calcitonin, a human hormone that prevents bone breakdown and increases bone density (thickness). Thus it helps to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Use Gemcal Nasal Spray as prescribed by the doctor. Gemcal Nasal Spray may cause certain side effects such as hypocalcemia, runny nose, nosebleed, sinus pain, application site reactions such as rhinitis (stuffy nose), epistaxis (nose bleeds) and other nasal symptoms, back pain, arthralgia (Joint pain) and headache. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if these side effects persist longer, please consult your doctor.

Gemcal Nasal Spray is for intranasal use only, do not inject or take it orally. Before using Gemcal Nasal Spray, inform your doctor of all your medical conditions, sensitivities, and all medications you are using. Gemcal Nasal Spray is intended for post-menopausal women; therefore, Gemcal Nasal Spray should not be recommended for other populations. Avoid drinking alcohol because it affects how the body absorbs calcium and vitamin D, which are essential for good bone formation.

Directions for Use

Insert the tip of the bottle into a nostril while closing the other nostril and spray towards the sides of the nostril. Keep your head straight and breathe gently. Repeat the same process for another nostril.

Medicinal Benefits

Gemcal Nasal Spray contains Calcitonin, a calcitonin receptor agonist that prevents the loss of bones that happens after menopause and helps to rebuild bones. Calcitonin is a hormone that the C-cells in the thyroid gland produce and release. It opposes the parathyroid hormone's action, helping regulate the blood’s calcium and phosphate levels. Gemcal Nasal Spray works by suppressing the activity of the osteoclasts (cells that break down bone). When the osteoclasts break down bone tissue, the calcium enters the bloodstream. Gemcal Nasal Spray lessens the amount of calcium in the blood by preventing the breakdown of bone. Thereby, Gemcal Nasal Spray strengthens the bones and minimizes the risk of fractures. Gemcal Nasal Spray also seems to decrease the amount of calcium the kidneys can re-absorb, lowering calcium levels further.

Storage

Store in a cool and dry place away from sunlight

Drug Warnings

Before using Gemcal Nasal Spray, Inform your doctor about all your medical conditions, sensitivities, and all medications you are using. Gemcal Nasal Spray is intended for post-menopausal women; therefore, Gemcal Nasal Spray should not be recommended for other populations. In rare situations, individuals using Gemcal Nasal Spray may be affected with anaphylactic shock (a sudden, severe, life-threatening allergic reaction leading to difficulty breathing); if you encounter it, stop using Gemcal Nasal Spray and contact your doctor immediately.

Diet & Lifestyle Advise

  • Consume calcium-rich foods like milk, yoghurt, cheese, green leafy vegetables, fish with bones such as salmon, sardines, calcium-fortified cereals and orange juice.
  • Exposure to sunlight helps synthesise vitamin D, essential for strong bones and muscles.
  • Eating vitamin-D-rich foods such as egg yolks, salmon, oily fish like sardines, and mackerel.
  • Indulging in regular exercise to prevent bone loss. Activities include brisk walking, dancing, jogging, and strength training exercises like lifting weights and using weight machines or elastic bands.
  • Engaging in activities for stress relief, such as meditation and yoga.
  • Preserving a healthy weight eases pressure on the bones.
  • Taking medications if one is at risk for osteoporosis.
  • Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption.

FAQs

Gemcal Nasal Spray contains Calcitonin, a human hormone that prevents bone breakdown and increases bone density (thickness).

If you have osteoporosis, avoid smoking, or try to quit. Tobacco use disrupts the mechanisms of bone turnover, resulting in reduced bone mass and bone mineral density (BMD), making bones prone to osteoporosis.

Gemcal Nasal Spray contains Calcitonin, a hormone that regulates the calcium level in the blood. This hormone helps in bone formation and also helps the body to reverse bone loss. Due to this, the number of cells that damages bones become comparatively less; hence the bone damage is halted. Using Gemcal Nasal Spray can increase bone formation by activation of the bone-forming cells.

Persons whose age is more than 45 years have low estrogen levels, females reaching menopause, too much consumption of alcohol, tobacco or caffeine, use of glucocorticoids and lack of calcium and vitamin D in foods are some of the factors that can increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Yes, Gemcal Nasal Spray is used together with calcium and vitamin D to treat bone loss in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis who have been postmenopausal for at least five years. Gemcal Nasal Spray inhibits the function of osteoclasts (bone breakdown), reducing bone resorption; thus, combining calcium and calcitonin could result in a positive bone balance.

Special Advise

  • Hypocalcemia has been reported. Make sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D, as recommended by the doctor.

Disease/Condition Glossary

Postmenopausal osteoporosis: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a medical disorder that causes bone loss and weakness during and after menopause. Estrogen insufficiency increases the risk of developing osteoporosis (weak bones). The decline in oestrogen during the menopause era (45 years of age) causes more bone resorption (osteoclasts; bone disintegration) than creation (osteoblasts; new bone development), leading to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis has no symptoms in the early stages. Yet, if sufficient care is not given, it might result in shattered bones. The bones do not pain at first, and breaks in the spine's bones may go unnoticed until they cause height reduction. Bones with osteoporosis might shatter at any time, even during normal tasks such as lifting or small activities.
