About Premarin Vaginal Cream

Premarin Vaginal Cream is used as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat symptoms associated with menopause. During menopause, the estrogen levels decrease, which leads to hot flushes. It is also used to relieve moderate to severe pain during sexual intercourse due to menopause.

Premarin Vaginal Cream contains conjugated estrogens used as hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It works by replacing the estrogen hormone in menopausal women. It also regulates the secretions of hormones such as luteinizing hormone (LH) (necessary for sexual function and the menstrual cycle) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (regulates the menstrual cycle). These effects help improve the symptoms of menopause.

Premarin Vaginal Cream is applied directly to the vagina. It should be used as recommended by your doctor. Do not use it for a longer duration than advised. After applying, if you get any allergic reactions such as vaginal burning, irritation or itching, stop using it and inform your doctor on priority. Because it is a topical cream, avoid using it on wounds, cuts, or burns. It may cause certain common side effects such as vaginal discharge, pain and swelling in the breasts, discharge from the nipples, changes in breast tissue, feeling or being sick, bloating, abdominal pain, headache etc.

Premarin Vaginal Cream should be avoided if you are allergic to it or any ingredients present in it. Inform your doctor about your current medical history, as this medicine should not be used in patients with breast cancer, endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the womb), unexplained vaginal bleeding, untreated endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the womb lining), thrombosis (have a blood clot in the veins), deep vein thrombosis (clotting of blood in the legs) or pulmonary embolism (clotting of blood in the lungs), heart attack or angina (chest pain), inherited porphyria (a blood disorder) or liver disease. Premarin Vaginal Cream is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. If you develop jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), high blood pressure and migraine-like headache, become pregnant; or notice signs of a blood clot such as redness, swelling and pain in the legs, sudden chest pain or difficulty in breathing, stop treatment and inform your doctor immediately. Inform your doctor if you have any intolerance to sugar.

Directions for Use

Follow your doctor's instructions for using this medicine. Fill the applicator with the medicine as directed. Insert the applicator high into the vagina and squeeze the plunger to release the drug. Clean the applicator with warm soapy water and thoroughly rinse it. To clean the applicator, do not use hot water or boil it. Your doctor will determine the dose based on your medical condition and reaction to treatment.

Medicinal Benefits

Premarin Vaginal Cream contains ‘conjugated estrogens’, a hormone replacement therapy (HRT). In menopause, estrogen levels become too low, so Premarin Vaginal Cream works by replacing this hormone. It also regulates the secretions of other hormones from the pituitary gland, such as luteinizing hormone (LH) (necessary for sexual function and the menstrual cycle) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (regulates the menstrual cycle). These effects help to reduce the symptoms of menopause.

Drug Warnings

Before using Premarin Vaginal Cream, inform your doctor if you are allergic to it. Also, inform if you have fibroids inside the womb, growth of womb lining outside the womb (endometriosis), excessive thickening of the womb lining (endometrial hyperplasia), increased risk of developing blood clots, increased risk of getting estrogen-sensitive cancer (in people with a family history of breast cancer), high blood pressure, diseases associated with liver, kidney, or heart, fluid retention (oedema), diabetes, gallbladder stones, migraine or severe headache, systemic lupus erythematosus, epilepsy (fits), asthma, osteosclerosis (a condition affecting eardrum and hearing), hypocalcemia (low calcium levels in the blood), and high levels of fat in the blood. Premarin Vaginal Cream increases the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer, so your doctor may prescribe you the hormonal medicine ‘progesterone’ to minimize this risk. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as Premarin Vaginal Cream is not recommended for use in such a population.

Premarin Vaginal Cream works by replacing the deficient estrogen hormone in menopausal women. It effectively reduces the symptoms and improves health conditions.

Your doctor will decide the dose of Premarin Vaginal Cream based on your health condition. Do not use more than the recommended dose of Premarin Vaginal Cream.

Premarin Vaginal Cream increases the risk of breast cancer. However, the risk increases when given only HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and longer durations.

Disease/Condition Glossary

Menopause: Menopause occurs when a woman between 45 and 55 has not had a period for 12 months or more. However, some women may also experience menopause before 45 years or after 55 years. It occurs due to decreased production of estrogen hormone. The change in levels of other hormones such as progesterone, luteinizing hormone and the follicle-stimulating hormone is also observed during menopause. It causes symptoms such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness, insomnia (sleeplessness), weight gain, reduced sexual desire, sore breasts, hair loss, unwanted hair growth, headache and urinary tract infections.
