About Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion

Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion belongs to the class of medicines called immunosuppressants used in the treatment of severe keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) in adults. Also, it is used to treat dry eyes in patients whose condition has not been improved with artificial tears. A dry eye is a common condition that occurs when tears are unable to provide sufficient moisture. 

Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion contains Cyclosporine, which works by increasing tear production and decreasing inflammation (swelling) in the eye. 

Use Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion as prescribed by your doctor. Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion is only for use in eyes. You are advised to use Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you based on your medical condition. In some cases, you may experience eye irritation, eye pain, watery eyes, itching in the eye, redness or swelling of the eyelid, and blurred vision using Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion . Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor.

Please tell your doctor if you are allergic to Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion or any other medicines. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult your doctor before using Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion . Avoid using Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion while you are wearing contact lenses. Drive only if your vision is clear, as Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion may cause temporary blurred vision immediately after applying. If you have or had an eye infection, inform your doctor before using Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion . 

Uses of Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion

Dry eyes and severe keratitis

Directions for Use

Lie down and tilt your head backwards. Pull your lower eyelid gently with your index finger to form a pocket. Instil the number of drops as advised by the doctor into the pocket of the lower eyelid. Close your eyes for 1-2 minutes. Do not touch the tip of the container to the eye, eyelids or surrounding areas as it may contaminate Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion . Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion is for external use only. Do not inject Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion .

Medicinal Benefits

Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion contains Cyclosporine, an immunosuppressant that increases tear production and decreases inflammation (swelling) in the eye. Thus, it is used in the treatment of severe keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) and to treat dry eyes in patients whose condition has not been improved with artificial tears.

How does the drug interact with Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml:
Co-administration of Baricitinib with Cyclosporine can increase the risk of infections as well as some cancers.

How to manage the interaction:
Taking Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml with Baricitinib is not recommended as it can cause an interaction, but it can be taken together if prescribed by a doctor. However, if you experience fever, chills, diarrhea, sore throat, muscle pains, breathing difficulty, blood in your coughing fluid, weight loss, red or irritated skin, body sores, and discomfort or burning sensation when you urinate, consult a doctor. Do not stop using any medications without a doctor's advice.
How does the drug interact with Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml:
Coadministration of pitavastatin with Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml may significantly increase the blood levels of pitavastatin which can increase the risk of side effects such as liver problems and rhabdomyolysis(involves the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue).

How to manage the interaction:
Taking Pitavastatin with Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml is not recommended, as it can possibly result in an interaction, it can be taken if your doctor has advised it. However, if you experience symptoms like unexpected bruising or bleeding, skin rash, itching, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unexplained muscular pain, tenderness, or weakness, fever, dark urine, chills, joint pain, or swelling, consult a doctor. Do not discontinue any medications without a doctor's advice.
How does the drug interact with Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml:
Combining Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml and Simvastatin can increase the blood levels and effects of Simvastatin. This can increase the risk of side effects such as liver damage and rhabdomyolysis(involves the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue).

How to manage the interaction:
Taking Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml and Simvastatin together is not recommended as it can lead to an interaction, but it can be taken if advised by your doctor. However, if you experience any symptoms like muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, fever or dark colored urine, chills, joint pain or swelling, unusual bleeding or bruising, skin rash, itching, loss of hunger, weakness, nausea, vomiting, and yellowing of the skin or eyes, contact the doctor immediately. Do not discontinue any medications without consulting your doctor.
How does the drug interact with Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml:
When Bosentan is taken with Cyclosporine, it may increase the risk of side effects.

How to manage the interaction:
Taking Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml with Bosentan is not recommended, but it can be taken if prescribed by the doctor. However, if you experience any symptoms like severe headache, nausea, or an increased heart rate, consult the doctor immediately. Do not stop using any medications without talking to a doctor.
How does the drug interact with Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml:
Taking cyclosporine with cidofovir can increase the risk of kidney problems.

The combined use of aliskiren and Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml can significantly increase the blood levels and effects of aliskiren, which may lead to low blood pressure, hyperkalemia (high potassium levels) in the body. High potassium levels can cause hyperkalemia, which can lead to kidney failure, muscular paralysis, abnormal heart rhythms. If you are elderly, dehydrated, or have kidney disease, diabetes, or severe heart failure, you are more prone to develop hyperkalemia while taking these medications.

How to manage the interaction:
Taking aliskiren and Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml will lead to an interaction, they can be taken together if your doctor has prescribed them. However, consult the doctor if you experience nausea, vomiting, weakness, disorientation, tingling in your hands and feet, feelings of heaviness in your legs, a weak pulse, or a slow or irregular heartbeat. It is important to maintain proper fluid intake while taking these medications. It is advised to reduce intake of potassium-rich foods such as tomatoes, raisins, figs, potatoes, lima beans, bananas, plantains, papayas, pears, cantaloupes, mangoes, and potassium-containing salt substitutes.

Coadministration of Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml with Orlistat can reduce the levels and effects of Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml.

Although there is a possible interaction between Orlistat and Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml, you can take these medicines together when prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop using any medications without talking to a doctor.

Co-administration of dabigatron etexilate with Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.4 ml may increase the blood levels of dabigatron etexilate.
