Tuspel Plus Expectorant belongs to a class of respiratory medications called 'expectorant' primarily used to treat cough. Coughing (dry or productive) is the body's way of clearing irritants (like allergens, mucus or smoke) from the airways. There are two types of coughs, namely: Dry cough and chesty cough. A dry cough is tickly and doesn't produce thick mucus, while a chesty cough (wet cough) produces mucous or sputum that helps clear the airways.

Tuspel Plus Expectorant consists of four medicines, namely: Bromohexine (mucolytic), Terbutaline (bronchodilator), Ammonium chloride (irritant/expectorant) and Menthol (cooling agent). Bromhexine makes sputum less viscous and makes it easier to cough out. Terbutaline works by dilating (expanding) and relaxing the air passages in the lungs, making breathing easier, especially in people with airway problems or respiratory obstructive disorders. Ammonium chloride is an expectorant that decreases the stickiness of mucous and helps remove it from the airways. Menthol is an organic compound that produces a cooling sensation and relieves throat irritation.

Tuspel Plus Expectorant is available in oral syrup and suspension. The most common side effects of Tuspel Plus Expectorant are nausea, diarrhoea, bloating, indigestion, vomiting, stomach upset, sweating, dizziness, headache and skin rash. Most of these side effects of Tuspel Plus Expectorant do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects are persistent, reach out to your doctor.

Let your doctor know if you have any allergic reactions to Tuspel Plus Expectorant or any other medication. Brief your medical history to the doctor if you have any heart, liver, kidney, lung diseases, depression and Parkinson's disease before taking Tuspel Plus Expectorant . Tuspel Plus Expectorant can cause sleepiness; hence avoid taking alcohol while using Tuspel Plus Expectorant . Tuspel Plus Expectorant may affect your ability to drive. It is advised not to drive whilst taking this medicine. Check with your doctor if you are pregnant, currently breastfeeding or taking any other prescribed or non-prescribed drugs.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is advised to inform your doctor before using Tuspel Plus Expectorant . If you are suffering from fits (epilepsy/seizures) or have a history of fits, please inform your doctor before taking Tuspel Plus Expectorant as it may increase the risk of recurrent fits. Tuspel Plus Expectorant is not recommended for children below 6 years of age and body weight less than 25 kg, as the safety and effectiveness were not established. If you have diabetes, regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is recommended while taking Tuspel Plus Expectorant . If you experience constipation, leg cramps, numbness or tingling, increased urination or thirst, muscle weakness or irregular heartbeats, contact your doctor, as it may be due to low potassium levels in the blood. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Tuspel Plus Expectorant to loosen mucus. If you have diabetes, fits, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid or heart problems, please inform your doctor before taking Tuspel Plus Expectorant .

• Take the medication as directed by the doctor and at regular intervals. Do not use other over the counter medications, herbal or vitamin supplements without informing your pharmacist or doctor when you take Tuspel Plus Expectorant .
• Know your triggers like allergens, such as pollen, dust and food items that make your asthma and other respiratory diseases severe.
• Quit smoking and avoid passive smoking. Smoking also reduces the effectiveness of the medicine.
• Drink extra fluids while you take Tuspel Plus Expectorant to help loosen congestion and lubricate the throat.
• Eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to strengthen your breathing muscles and boost your immune system.
• Learning breathing exercises will help you move more air in and out of your lungs.

• Regularly monitoring blood sugar levels and serum potassium levels is required while taking Tuspel Plus Expectorant .
• ECG (electrocardiogram) of the heart is recommended, and the heartbeat should be closely monitored. 
• Tuspel Plus Expectorant should not be given to children less than 6 years of age and weighing less than 25 kg.

Cough: It occurs as a reflex action in the throat when there is mucus or any other foreign irritant in it. Cough can be dry or productive. A productive cough (wet cough) develops sputum (phlegm or mucus) from the lungs. Cough is commonly caused as a response to allergy or viral infection but coughing up mucus is possibly an indication of infection in the respiratory tract. If you are coughing out thick, solid white mucus, it indicates that you may have a bacterial infection in the airways. Clear or light-coloured mucus indicates allergies or minor infections in the respiratory tract, and yellow or green mucus indicates a respiratory infection.
