Afrid 2% Gargle

Afrid 2% Gargle is an antiseptic and disinfectant used to treat sore throat. It also treats and prevents the infections of the lining of the mouth and throat, such as gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and mouth ulcers. Afrid 2% Gargle is also used to cleanse the mouth for preparation of the oral mucosa before any injection, dental surgery or tooth extraction. 

Afrid 2% Gargle contains Povidone iodine. It works by inhibiting the growth of infection-causing microbes. As a small molecule, iodine can easily penetrate microorganisms and oxidizes essential proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, leading to cell death. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa.

Use Afrid 2% Gargle as suggested by a doctor. Afrid 2% Gargle may cause common side effects like mouth or throat irritation, dryness of mouth and throat, and burning sensation. These side effects gradually resolve during the treatment and do not require medical attention. However, if the side effects persist longer, please seek medical help.

Brief your medical history to the doctor if you are allergic to iodine or povidone. Let your doctor know if you have thyroid diseases, liver, and kidney problems before starting Afrid 2% Gargle. Please tell your doctor if you are undergoing any lithium therapy or treatment involving radioactive iodine. Do not use Afrid 2% Gargle before or after radioiodine scintigraphy or radioiodine treatment of thyroid carcinoma. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or are a lactating mother.

Do not use Afrid 2% Gargle if you are allergic to povidone-iodine. Let your doctor know if you have an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or any other thyroid diseases (nodular colloid goitre, endemic goitre or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), liver, or kidney problems. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or are a lactating mother before using Afrid 2% Gargle. Afrid 2% Gargle should be used in children under twelve years of age only when the doctor has advised it.

Drug-Drug Interaction: Afrid 2% Gargle may interact with anti-depressants (Lithium).

Drug-Disease Interaction: Before using Afrid 2% Gargle, let your doctor know if you have any allergic reactions to iodine or povidone, overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or any other thyroid diseases, liver, or kidney problems.

• Eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to strengthen your breathing muscles and boost your immune system.
• Drink fluids like hot herbal teas, soups, and broths to help loosen congestion and lubricate the throat.
• Gargle with warm salt water regularly.
• Avoid smoking to prevent further irritation of the throat.
• Use a cool-air humidifier to prevent dry air that can further irritate a sore throat.
• Avoid caffeine and alcohol to prevent further dryness of the throat. 

Sore throat: It is the pain and irritation in the throat that worsens with swallowing. It causes dryness and scratchiness in the throat. It is often caused by a viral infection, cold or flu. Symptoms of a sore throat include pain, dryness and scratchiness in the throat, difficulty in swallowing, swollen and red tonsils, hoarse voice, and sore and swollen glands in the neck and jaw. Treatment includes drinking warm liquids, gargling with warm salt water and medicated gargles/rinses, lozenges, and pain-relieving medicines.
