About Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm

Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm belongs to the class of 'antivirals' that is generally used to treat recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores) in immunocompetent adults and adolescents aged 12 and up. Recurrent herpes simplex labialis, often known as oral herpes, is a disorder caused by the herpes simplex virus that affects the lips. It's a common and contagious illness that spreads quickly.

Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm contains acyclovir, it exerts antiviral activity against herpes simplex viruses (HSV) by interfering with DNA synthesis and limiting viral replication.

Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm is solely for the topical treatment of recurrent HSV lesions on the lips and face. It should be used as prescribed by your doctor. Dry lips, desquamation (scale off or peel off), dryness of skin, cracked lips, scorching skin, pruritus, flakiness of skin, and stinging on the skin were the most prevalent adverse effects to Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm at the site of topical administration. These side effects may not occur in every patient who takes this drug and will fade over time. Please notify your doctor if the side effects last longer or worsen.

Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm is restricted for use in people who are sensitive to acyclovir, valacyclovir or any component of the formulation. Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm should not be applied on mucous membranes including in the eye or inside the mouth or nose. The effect of Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm has not been established in immunocompromised patients. Before using Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm, consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm is recommended not for use in children below 12 years.

Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm treats viral infections caused by the herpes simplex and varicella-zoster viruses. It consists of Acyclovir, an antiviral drug. It works by killing and stopping the growth of the virus. Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm effectively treats herpes simplex encephalitis (brain inflammation by herpes simplex virus) and neonatal herpes simplex virus infection. Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm is also useful in preventing the reactivation of the cytomegalovirus infection in seropositive (showing a positive result of a blood test for a particular antibody) patients following bone marrow transplantation.

Acyclovir should be used with caution to patients who have impaired kidney function. In patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, dosage modifications are advised.

Patients who are dehydrated may be more susceptible to nephrotoxicity from using acyclovir. Acyclovir should be infused intravenously over the course of an hour, along with appropriate hydration.

How to manage the interaction:
Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm is excreted through the kidneys, dehydration may cause damage to kidney functions. Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm infusion over an hour is recommended in dehydrated patients. Urine output should be monitored.

Hemodialysis effectively removes acyclovir from the body. Following 6 hours of dialysis, it has been demonstrated that plasma levels of acyclovir decrease by 60%. After hemodialysis, acyclovir should be administered. If not, a second dosage might be administered following each hemodialysis session.

How to manage the interaction:
Patients undergoing hemodialysis should be given Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm after completing hemodialysis as hemodialysis removes 60% of Acylin 5% Cream 5 gm from the body.
