About Myostigmin 0.5mg Injection 1ml
Myostigmin 0.5mg Injection 1ml belongs to a group of medicines called 'anticholinesterase agents/acetylcholinesterase inhibitors,' primarily used to treat myasthenia gravis and to reverse the effects of anaesthesia medicines used during surgery. Myostigmin 0.5mg Injection 1ml is also used to treat paralytic ileus (a rare form of constipation) and postoperative urinary retention.
Myostigmin 0.5mg Injection 1ml contains 'Neostigmine.' It increases levels of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine by stopping the excess cholinesterase activity (an enzyme required to break down acetylcholine) involved in communication between nerve impulses and muscle movements. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit the message from one nerve cell to another nerve cell, muscle cell, or gland cell. Thus Myostigmin 0.5mg Injection 1ml helps in proper muscle functioning and prevents muscle weakness.
Myostigmin 0.5mg Injection 1ml will be administered by a health care professional, do not self-administer. Your dose and duration will be based on the severity of your medical condition. In some cases, you may experience common side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, slow heartbeat, abdominal cramp, diarrhoea, increased saliva production, dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, and dry mouth. These side effects are not familiar to everyone and vary individually. If you notice any side effects that are not manageable, please consult your doctor.
Inform your doctor before using this medicine if you have a history of liver, heart or kidney diseases, asthma, stomach ulcer, fits, Parkinson's disease, overactive thyroid, or vagotonia/irritability of the vagus nerve (connects to the abdomen from the brain) that causes excess bowel contractions. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or a breastfeeding mother before starting Myostigmin 0.5mg Injection 1ml. Avoid consuming alcohol during the course to prevent unwanted side effects. Myostigmin 0.5mg Injection 1ml can be given to children if prescribed by the doctor; the dose depends on the child's age and weight.

Generally, women aged 20 to 40 and men aged 50 to 80 are affected by myasthenia gravis. High-risk factors for developing this disease include autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, infections, surgical procedures, thyroid disease, and medications for malaria, heart arrhythmias and cancer.
Diabetes may trigger a stronger immune response due to an abnormal rise in blood sugar levels. This may further lead to the worsening of the myasthenia gravis.

Disease/Condition Glossary
Myasthenia gravis: It is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes skeletal muscle weakness. The immune system mistakenly attacks its healthy tissues, damaging the neuromuscular membrane. This reduces the effect of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that plays a major role in the communication between nerve cells and muscles. Myasthenia gravis occurs when the communication between nerve cells and muscles becomes impaired. This prevents muscle contractions, thereby leading to muscle weakness. The most affected muscles are those of the face and eyes. Symptoms of myasthenia gravis include double vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty chewing or swallowing, weakness, problems with lifting objects, and trouble talking and walking.
Paralytic ileus: It is a condition in which there is obstruction of the intestine due to paralysis of intestinal muscles. This prevents the passage of food and leads to its accumulation in the intestine. Paralytic ileus occurs due to malfunctioning nerves and muscles in the intestine, thereby impairing digestive movement.
