Domperidone+ilaprazole

About

Domperidone+ilaprazole belongs to a group of medicines called gastrointestinal agents used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the food pipe (oesophagus). Peptic ulcers are sores that develop on the inner lining of the intestine and stomach.

Domperidone+ilaprazole is a combination of two drugs: Ilaprazole (proton pump inhibitor) and Domperidone (a dopamine antagonist). Ilaprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Proton pumps are tiny substances in the stomach lining that help it make acid to digest food. Ilaprazole prevents proton pumps from working properly. This reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes. Domperidone works by increasing the movement of food through the stomach and the digestive tract more quickly and in this way reduces the feeling of bloating, fullness and indigestion. It also blocks messages between parts of your brain called the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) and the vomiting centre. This stops you from feeling sick (nauseous) and prevents you from vomiting. Together, Domperidone+ilaprazole helps treat acidity-related problems.

Take Domperidone+ilaprazole as prescribed. You are advised to take Domperidone+ilaprazole for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you depending on your medical condition. In some cases, you may experience certain common side effects such as diarrhoea, stomach pain, flatulence, dryness in the mouth, dizziness, and fatigue. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects persistently.

Inform your doctor before taking Domperidone+ilaprazole if you have a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or intestinal obstruction. Do not take Domperidone+ilaprazole if you have black, tarry bowel motions; blockage or tear in your intestines, disorder known as phenylketonuria, low potassium, or magnesium level. Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking Domperidone+ilaprazole if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Domperidone+ilaprazole may cause dizziness, so drive only if you are alert. Domperidone+ilaprazole should not be given to children below 12 years of age. Avoid consuming alcohol and Domperidone+ilaprazole as it could lead to increased drowsiness and elevate stomach acid production. Keep your doctor informed about your health condition and medicines to rule out any side effects.

    Patients Concern

    Disease/Condition Glossary

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): The stomach is usually protected from acid by a mucous layer. In some cases, due to excess acid production, the mucous layer gets irritated or eroded, which leads to complications like GERD, hyperacidity, peptic ulcers, and heartburn. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the food pipe (oesophagus). This backflow (acid reflux) irritates the food pipe and causes heartburn. Symptoms include heartburn, sour or bitter taste in the mouth, and difficulty swallowing.

Peptic ulcers: These are sores that develop on the stomach and intestine lining due to erosion of the stomach's protective lining. Symptoms include nausea, changes in appetite, bloody or dark stools, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, and indigestion.

    FAQs

Domperidone+ilaprazole is a combination of two drugs, namely: Ilaprazole and Domperidone. Ilaprazole works by blocking the action of an enzyme called gastric proton pump, which is responsible for acid production. Domperidone works by increasing the movements and contractions of stomach muscles. Together, Domperidone+ilaprazole helps in treating acidity related problems.

Diarrhoea might be a side-effect of Domperidone+ilaprazole. Drink enough fluids and eat fibre rich food if you experience diarrhoea. Consult your doctor if you experience excessive diarrhoea or if you find blood in stools.

Avoid lying down immediately after meals to prevent acid reflux. Raise the head of the bed 10-20cm by putting a pillow so that the head and chest are above the waist. This helps in preventing acid reflux.

Dry mouth could be a side-effect of Domperidone+ilaprazole. Limiting caffeine intake, avoiding smoking and mouthwashes containing alcohol, drinking water regularly, and chewing sugar-free gum/candy might stimulate saliva and prevent drying of the mouth.

Do not take Domperidone+ilaprazole for longer durations unless prescribed by the doctor. Consult your doctor if your condition does not improve even after taking Domperidone+ilaprazole for 7 days.
