Imeglimin

About

Imeglimin is an antidiabetic medicine used to treat diabetes. It is used for the treatment of Type II Diabetes. Type II Diabetes Mellitus is a serious condition wherein the body doesn’t use insulin effectively, which causes unusual blood glucose levels. Type II diabetes patients either do not create enough insulin, or the insulin they do make does not accomplish its purpose in the body (insulin resistance). This condition mostly occurs in middle-aged or older patients.

Imeglimin contains Imeglimin, which belongs to the aminotriazines class of antidiabetic medicine. It works in two ways: 1) increased glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) and cell mass preservation; 2) improved insulin action, including the potential for reduction of hepatic glucose output and improvement in insulin signalling in both the liver and skeletal muscle. Diet management and exercise, along with treatment of Imeglimin are used to control blood sugar levels.

Imeglimin may cause certain side effects such as vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, headache and allergic reactions. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor. Imeglimin should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food. The dose of the medicine will be decided by the doctor based on your disease condition.

Imeglimin should be avoided if you are allergic to any of the medicines or the components in it. Inform your doctor about your medical history and the medicines you are taking, including herbs and supplements, before starting the treatment with Imeglimin. This can help prevent unwanted effects. Imeglimin is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver or kidney disease. It is unknown whether Imeglimin can be given to pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers. Hence, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking Imeglimin. It is not recommended for use in children below 18 years of age.

    • Inform your physician about all your underlying conditions, like kidney disease or liver disease, prior heart attack, alcohol intake, etc., before the doctor prescribes you Imeglimin.
    • Avoid drinking alcohol while on Imeglimin as it increases the risk of hypoglycemia (decrease in blood sugar, which might be fatal in some cases) and lactic acidosis (when the lactic acid increases in the body, which impacts the functioning of various organs in the body).
    • Lifestyle modifications are the most important step in controlling blood sugar levels.
    • Your doctor may advise frequent blood tests to check your blood sugar levels.
