About
Satranidazole belongs to a group of medicines known as antibiotics used to treat various infections caused by bacteria and parasites (amoeba). It is prescribed for the treatment of diarrhea. Additionally, it also treats vaginal and other bacterial infections. A bacterial infection is a condition in which harmful bacteria enter, multiply, and infect our bodies. It can target any body part and multiple very quickly. Amoebic dysentery can be caused due to Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, or Clostridium difficile.
Satranidazole contains ‘Satranidazole’ that kills the harmful bacteria and parasites (amoeba) by damaging its DNA and preventing these bacteria growth spread hence relieving the symptoms. It is bactericidal and works by killing bacteria that cause infections. It prevents the division of bacterial cells and inhibits the repairing of bacterial cells. Altogether it kills the bacteria. Satranidazole does not treat a viral infection like flu or a common cold.
Take Satranidazole as prescribed. You are advised to take Satranidazole for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you depending on your medical condition. In some cases, you may experience certain common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, weakness, dizziness, dry mouth, and metallic taste. Most of these side effects of Satranidazole do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects persistently.

Diet & Lifestyle Advise
- If you have diarrhea try to drink appropriate amounts of fluids to avoid dehydration.
- If you have minor diarrhea (less than four stools daily) drinking caffeine-free soft drinks, juices, or sport rehydration drinks can be sufficient.
- If the diarrhea is more severe, specially formulated rehydration drinks should be taken.
- Do not drink or eat a lot of caffeine-containing products such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola, or chocolate. Satranidazole may increase nervousness, sleeplessness, and anxiety caused by caffeine.
- Probiotics should be taken after taking the full course of Satranidazole in order to restore some healthy bacteria in the intestines that may have been killed.
- Include more fiber-enriched food in your diet, as it can be easily digested by your gut bacteria, which helps stimulate their growth. Thus, fiber-rich foods may help restore healthy gut bacteria after a course of antibiotics.
- Whole grains like whole-grain bread, brown rice should be included in your diet. Make sure you drink plenty of water or other fluids every day while you are taking Satranidazole.
- Avoid intake of alcoholic beverages with Satranidazole as it can make you dehydrated and may affect your sleep. This can make it harder for your body to aid the Satranidazole in fighting off infections.
